Pikachu Beanie

It seems Pokemon is a Go again and everyone loves this fun little guy! I was asked to make a Pikachu hat for a custom order and couldn’t find a pattern that fit the image in my head so as a designer what do I do? I write it up and share with my friends! Enjoy!

Supplies

Worsted Weight Yarn in yellow, red, black and white.

J hook and an H hook and a Yarn needle

Gauge       7 hdc and 5 rows is 2 in

Hat Base

Child/Teenager with a J Hook

make a magic ring.

Round 1: 8 hdc in ring, sl st in the first hdc (8 hdc)

Round 2: ch 1, *2 hdc in each st*, sl st in the first hdc (16 hdc)

Round 3: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next st, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (24 hdc)

Round 4: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 2 st, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (32 hdc)

Round 5: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 3 st, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (40 hdc)

Round 6: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 4 st, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (48 hdc)

Round 7: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 5 st, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (56 hdc)

Round 8-18: ch 1, *hdc around, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (56 hdc)

Round 19: ch 1, *hdc around, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc, fasten off (56 hdc)

Adult with a J Hook

make a magic ring.

Round 1: 8 hdc in ring, sl st in the first hdc (8 hdc)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each st, sl st in the first hdc (16 hdc)

Round 3: ch 1, *2 hdc in the next hdc, hdc in the next st, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (24 hdc)

Round 4: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 2 st, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (32 hdc)

Round 5: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 3 hdc, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (40 hdc)

Round 6: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 4 hdc, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (48 hdc)

Round 7: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 5 hdc, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (56 hdc)

Round 8: ch 1, *2 hdc in the 1st st, hdc in the next 6 hdc, repeat from*, sl st in the first hdc (64 hdc)

Round 9: ch 1, *hdc around* repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (64 hdc)

Round 10-18: ch 1, *hdc around, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc (64 hdc)

Round 19: ch 1, *hdc around, repeat from *, sl st in the first hdc, fasten off (64 hdc)

Ear Flaps (optional)

Count out 24 stitches on the front of the hat. Place a stitch marker on either side of these stitches. These stitches are now marking where your earflaps will begin. You can then mark out 10 sts from your marker for each of the flaps.

Row 1: attach yarn in 1st st and hdc in same st and next 9 st, ch 1 and turn (10)

Row 2: hdc in each st, ch 1 and turn (10)

Row 3-5: hdc dec, hdc in next 6 st, hdc, ch 1 and turn (8)

Row 6: hdcc dec, hdc in next 4 st, hdc, tie off and weave in ends (6)

Ears (make 2)

With H hook and black yarn, work in spiral

Round 1: Create 4 sc in magic circle (4)

Round 2: *2 sc in 1st st, sc in next, repeat from * (6)

Round 3: *2 sc in 1st st, sc in next, repeat from * (9)

Round 4: sc in each st around (9)

Round 5: *2sc in 1st st, sc in next 2 sc, repeat from * (12)

Change to yellow

Round 6-9: sc in each st around (12)

Round 10: *sc dec, sc in next 2, repeat from * (9)

Round 11: sc in each st around (9)

Round 12: sc in each st around, tie off and leave length for sewing (10)

*Sew ears on top of hat at row 6 and 7 on both sides.

Eyes (make 2)

With black yarn and J hook

Round 1: 12 dc in magic circle, sl st to top of 1st dc, tie off and leave length for sewing

With white yarn and J hook

Round 1: 6sc in magic circle, sl st to top of 1st st, tie off and leave length for sewing

*Sew white piece to black piece and then sew black piece to center of face at row 8 about 8 st apart.

Cheeks (make 2)

With red yarn and J hook

Round 1: 12 dc in magic circle, sl st to top of 1st st, ch 1

Round 2: *2 sc in same st, sc in next st, repeat from *, sl st to top of 1st st and tie off, leave length for sewing

*Sew cheeks on either side of face about 1 row down from the outside of the eyes.

For nose and mouth find center of face and using length of black yarn create V for nose and a W for the mouth.

*Finish hat with a row of sc in black around last round of hat and earflaps.

  1. On the adult size round 9 is 64 stitches. How is it that round 10-18 are 56 stitches when there is not a decrease in the pattern at all.
