Harry Potter CAL – The Spells

15 - 3 (6)

The Harry Potter Crochet a Long is coming to an end and I thought what better way to round it all up then to add some spells. I have two options for the banners on this afghan and I hope that at least one of them is to your liking.

Expecto Patronum Finished Afghan.

First is my favorite and the one I have hooked up and added to my afghan, Expecto Patronum. Expecto Patronum is used to create your very own Patronus. This spell definitely comes in handy in those darker moments. I am doing mine in white with black letters but I cannot wait to see what others come up with.

Petrifucus Totalus Finished Afghan.

The second option I made was Petrificus Totalus! This little spell will freeze your opponent into a petrified state. Perfect for those that get in your way.

Just like in the previous squares instead of the common C2C method of double crochets and chain 3s, I used hdcs and only chained 2. Which means I chained 5 instead of 6 on the increase stitches. Doing this with a smaller H hook has my finished squares measuring approximately 15×15 inches and my banner will be the length of three squares across plus their border. Don’t forget to block your squares and banner before they are attached, this makes it much easier to line them up evenly. Also do a light blocking when your afghan is done. This will help to keep it nice and smooth and give it a great finished look that will last after washes.

After sewing my squares and banners together I did a row of hdc around the entire piece and then using the house colors I did a simple border. Using green I attached the yarn with a sc  and then did a ch 1, sk 1, sc (repeat) and a sc, ch 2, sc in each corner around the afghan. I repeated this with the other house colors by doing the sc into the ch 1 of the previous row.

As always, you can check out my video tutorials  at the top of the page, for short videos that show each step of working up a graph in c2c. For a longer video about the basic c2c check out the one by Mikey over at The Crochet Crowd!

    1. Sorry, I just saw your question and I hope it’s not to late. I used about 4-5 skeins of white for all of the border and banner, 2 black, less than 2 buff (skin color) and 1 skein or less for all of the other colors. I didn’t make a list because I knew that others would be creating their squares with different hooks, stitches and weights of yarn. I hope this helps. Happy Hooking! 🙂

  2. Can you tell me how your joined the individual squares together? I’ve got all the squares and banners made, but still have to block them, but I’d like to know what stitch you used to join them all. I’ve never made a blanket like this before, so any help you can give would be appreciated.

  3. I am making the spell banners and noticed they are 80 columns, while the squares are 25. when you add the three squares together how will they fit the 80 in the spell banner. thank you.

  4. I don’t see the Draco graph, I’m probably just missing it somewhere, but can you point me in its direction?

  5. Do you have to do c2c or can you do back and forward? How to you block the squares? What stitch do you use to join the squares. This is my first ever graphgan do you have written instructions?

    1. You can do any stitch you would like. I just used c2c on mine. There are lots of tips and directions on each of the posts as well as links to other graphgan tutorials here on the blog.
